Event Details

There's free parking opposite the venue and a pay + display car park in Duke St.

Foyer 

6:00 pm   An opportunity to view the exhibition (with a drink and music from the Sole Bay Strings). 

Different lives, different cultures, different continents, but a common path of profound dedication and achievement: Within the mundane realm of daily living these three men sought to forge an existence filled with dignity, freedom and happiness for all (for more info about the exhibition see the video at www.gandhi-king-ikeda.co.uk)

6:30 pm   Official opening by Peter Bye, Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk

 

Lecture Theatre adjacent to Foyer

Mike Saks (UCS Provost and Chief Exec) will chair the evening and introduce the speakers

 

6:45 pm  Col. James Durant (Officer in the American Bar Association and former Division Chair) will talk about the impact of Martin Luther King’s struggle for African American Equality on US law (James’ father was a contemporary of Dr King at Morehouse College, and his ancestors’ story was told in the Roots TV series).

 

7:15 pm   Dame Claire Bertschinger (the nurse whose situation in Ethiopia inspired Bob Geldof to set up Live Aid) will share experiences from her autobiography ‘Moving Mountains’. Claire has been described as ‘one of the true heroines of our time’ and her life in many ways exemplifies the values of the exhibition.

 

8:00 pm   An opportunity to ask James and Claire questions (after which any remaining time will be available to view the exhibition and chat with fellow guests)
